3 Different Meanings of the Phrasal Verb "TURN UP"  

Before we start, just a note on the pronunciation: when you pronounce "Turn up" there is no "R" in "turn" and it uses the disgusting sound "urghhh!"  Here are three meanings of this phrasal verb...

1. To increase the volume  

Examples: 

a. I can't hear very well, can you turn up the volume? or Can you turn the volume up?

b. Can you turn it up? I can't hear the TV, can you turn it up?    

2. To  Arrive  

Examples: 

a. Imagine you go to a meeting and you arrive 10 minutes late: you turn up 10 minutes late.  

b. I usually turn up to work when I'm ready but most people have to turn up for work on time otherwise they will get an evil look from their boss.  

3. To Appear  

Example: 

a. I lost my keys and I've looked everywhere for them. I even looked inside the fridge and I couldn't find them anywhere. 6 weeks later they turned up in my front garden under a metreof snow!
